I am a native of Savannah, Georgia, and my family’s history in Savannah reaches back to the Colonial period.*  I have lived in several other cities in the United States, including Atlanta, GA, Jacksonville, FL, Long Beach, CA and Los Angeles, CA.  My chief interests are teaching, history, technology, cycling, music and travel.  Following are a few details and links about each of these interests.

*My ancestor James Burnside arrived in Savannah in 1733.  In 1748 he moved to Bethlehem, PA and started a farm which today is a living history museum.  You can take a virtual tour of the museum here:  Burnside Virtual Tour.)

Academic Background

AA, History, Los Angeles Valley College

BA, History, California State University, Long Beach

M. Ed. Candidate, Broadfield Social Sciences, Armstrong Atlantic State University (expected degree:  2005)

My primary field of concentration as an undergraduate was in Latin American political history.  At CSULB, I was privileged to have studied with Dr. William F. Sater, author of numerous books and articles including Chile and the United States: Empires in Conflict (Athens:  University of Georgia Press, 1990), and A History of Chile, 1808-1994 (Cambridge:  Cambridge University Press, 1996, co-authored with Simon Collier) (review).  In addition to U.S. and Latin American political history, I have other research interests in world history, modernization and development, history of technology, and historiography.

Technology Background

I first became interested in computers in the late 1970s, a time when many believed, as I did, that computers would soon become a boon for composing, arranging and performing music.  While in college, I got a part-time job working for a music company.  Before long, I was writing computer programs for business analysis instead of dealing with the music side of the business.  I worked my way through college doing this, and after graduation I was offered a job teaching computing.   After about two years of teaching, one of my former colleagues asked if I would be interested in a consulting arrangement with Xerox Corporation.  This eventually led to contract work at Xerox, and about a year later I became a Xerox employee.  My career at Xerox was especially rewarding because of the extraordinary people I worked with and because of Xerox’ innovation in computing.  (Did you know that Xerox engineers developed, among many other things, the mouse, the laser printer, the graphical user interface, and Ethernet?)

Cycling

I have been an active bicyclist and cycle tourist for over thirty years.  Almost every year I make one international trip by bicycle, and I usually participate in several other rides and cycling events in the United States.  My favorite place to ride is the Pacific Coast, especially Southern California and Baja, Mexico.  I also enjoy bicycle racing (as an observer only!), and over the years I have accumulated an interesting collection of vintage lightweight bikes.  Below are links to a few of my favorite cycling-related sites.
(I’ll post more links soon about my travels in the U. S. and abroad plus a page showing a few of my bikes.)

Sunset Beach to Newport Beach Bike Ride - I used to ride here every Wednesday night with my friend
  Matt Gorski.

Classic Rendezvous - Bicycle photographs and information for cyclists, collectors and art lovers.
(Picasso considered bicycles high art—he even displayed one (a Bianchi) in his studio!)

Trento Bike Pages – France - One of the things I love about cycling is its international character.
Be sure to read some of the
Paris-Brest-Paris ride reports on this page, and then sample the rest
of the Trento Bike pages web site.

Other Sports

I think high school and college sports are the greatest!  I participated in many team and individual sports
in my youth, and I still enjoy them, but I have to admit I am more often a spectator than a participant these
days.  Still, in addition to cycling, I play softball once in a while, and I still enjoy swimming and body surfing.
Here are a few links to some favorite sports pages:

Long Beach State Athletics Home Page - Long Beach State has a rich sports tradition that includes
numerous NCAA titles.  The Athletics Home Page includes links for Baseball, Cross-Country,
Softball, Track and Field, Women’s   Soccer and Tennis, and Men’s and Women’s Basketball,
  Golf, Volleyball, and Water Polo.

Atlanta Braves - The Braves moved to Atlanta from Milwaukee in 1966, when I was a Little
Leaguer.  Until then, I was a New York Yankees fan because the Yankees were on television
nearly every Saturday during baseball season.  My Little League team went to Atlanta by
charter bus to see a game, and I became a Braves fan right away.  My favorite players were
Eddie Matthews, Hank Aaron and Joe Torre.

Music

I became interested in music when I was very young, and I have been a guitarist for nearly forty years.  I worked in the music business while I lived in California.  I still enjoy both playing and listening to a broad range of styles in both classical and popular music.  I perform in church each Sunday, and I make a few professional appearances each year.

Soon I will post links to some of my favorite music, musicians, composers and instruments below.
